Information About Prattville

In 1835, Daniel Pratt purchased nearly 2000 acres of land in the area that is now downtown Prattville, in order to expand the Cotton gin manufacturing operation that he shared with Samuel Griswold into Alabama. In addition to the gin factory, he established a sawmill, a gristmill, a cotton factory, and an operation that produced sashes, doors, and blinds. All of these enterprises prospered, causing the city to do so as well, which allowed him to industrialize the area within a dozen years. Although a large part of the original cotton gin building was completely destroyed by fire on September, 11, 2002, there are still a few of the beautiful original structures that still stand today. These buildings serve as a reminder to the residents of Prattville of all the thought, planning, and hard work that Mr. Pratt put into the great city of Prattville and that he laid the foundation to the beautiful city that Prattville is today.

Things To Do

-Bring your clubs and enjoy a round of golf at the beautiful Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail at Capital Hill. Choose from three 18-hole championship courses, which are situated on over 1,500 acres of beautiful scenery along the Alabama River. Capital Hill is known to be a trail favorite among golfers and golf-writers alike.

-Visit the Daniel Pratt Historic District downtown Prattville where you will find the Creekwalk Garden, which leads you out onto the Creekwalk, both of which overlook the beautiful Autauga Creek! During the summer, you can bring your kayaks and canoes and enjoy the Autauga Creek Canoe Trail, which will lead you past the Pratt Park Splash Pad and pool, which are great places to take the family for a break from the summer heat. The Splash Pad is open daily May through September, 8am-8pm with no entrance fee, while the pool has a $3 entrance fee and opens Memorial Day weekend. Prattville has quite a few parks located throughout the city, where you can take the kids to play or you can go to exercise or just relax. Among these are Pratt Park and Spinner’s Park, which are both located downtown. You may also visit Overlook Park or Newton Park, which are both a little more centrally-located, or visit Cooter’s Pond Park on the Alabama River, where there is a boat dock as well as a picnic/play area. Visit the Prattaugan Museum/Heritage Center downtown, or drive out to County Road 4 to visit the Buena Vista mansion to learn more of the interesting history that made Prattville what it is today! Prattville also hosts many special events throughout the year, including various parades, art festivals and shows, and a huge celebration for each of the major holidays!
